Sottsass Associati

FOR KALDEWEI

Ettore Sottsass was born in Innsbruck in 1917, and graduated in architecture from Turin Polytechnic in 1939.

In 1947 he opened his own studio in Milan and worked on various projects as an architect and designer. His design work was always combined with cultural initiatives. He played a key role in advancing and developing the role of design both before and after WW2. In 1958 he joined Olivetti as a design consultan, designing office equipment, typewriters and furniture. His many designs included Italy’s first electronic calculator in 1959 and the portable Valentine typewriter in 1969, consisting of a bright red plastic which became a fashion accessory.

In 1981, he and several co-workers, friends, and internationally renowned architects established the Memphis Group, which soon became the flagship for ‘New Design’ and was something of a trailblazer for the artistic avant-garde of this era. In the same year, Ettore Sottsass simultaneously assembled a major design consultancy which he named Sottsass Associati. The studio gave the possibility to build architecture on a substantial scale as well as to design for large international industries.

Since his passing in December 2007, the studio is still based on the cultural guidance of Ettore Sottsass and the work is conducted by the talent and energy of its associates.

Sottsass Associati are presently based in London and Milan and continue to sustain the work, philosophy and culture of the studio.
